The engine, transmission, exhaust system, fuel tank, and much of the traditional drivetrain disappear, leaving engineers with a much cleaner architecture: a battery under the floor, one or more compact electric motors, power electronics, suspension, steering, brakes, and a digital control system.

That simplicity has encouraged an increasingly important idea: the modular electric vehicle.

At first glance, the concept sounds almost like a life-size construction set. Build a standardized electric platform, then attach different bodies, battery configurations, interiors, cargo modules, or even complete corner assemblies depending on what the vehicle needs to do.

In reality, modular EVs already exist, although not always in the dramatic form suggested by futuristic concept cars. Volkswagen’s MEB architecture supports vehicles ranging from compact cars to large vans, Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP underpins very different EVs, Kia has introduced a dedicated platform designed around multiple body configurations, and specialist companies such as REE Automotive have pushed the skateboard concept much further.

The important question is no longer whether electric cars can be modular. They already are. The real question is how far modularity can go before engineering, safety, cost, and regulation impose limits.

What Does a Modular Electric Vehicle Actually Mean?

The term can describe several different ideas, and confusing them creates unrealistic expectations.

The most common form is platform modularity. A manufacturer develops a standardized technical foundation that can be stretched, shortened, widened, fitted with different batteries, and used beneath several vehicle categories.

Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix, better known as MEB, is a clear example. Volkswagen designed it specifically for electric vehicles and says it can support products across multiple segments, from smaller cars to SUVs, sedans, and vans. Its basic architecture places the high-voltage battery between the axles and packages the electric drivetrain compactly to maximize passenger space.

A second type is component modularity. Batteries, motors, electronics, suspension assemblies, or other systems are designed around standardized interfaces so manufacturers can combine different versions without redesigning the whole vehicle.

A third and more radical form is body modularity. Here, one lower vehicle platform can support substantially different upper bodies or configurations.

Finally, there is service modularity, in which certain parts are designed to be replaced or exchanged much more easily than in a conventional automobile. Battery swapping is one example.

These approaches share the same underlying philosophy: instead of designing every new car as a largely unique product, create reusable building blocks.

Why Electric Cars Are Particularly Suitable for Modular Design

Internal-combustion vehicles can also use modular platforms, and automakers have done so for decades. But electric powertrains make the concept considerably easier.

A combustion car must accommodate an engine, gearbox, cooling system, exhaust routing, fuel system, intake hardware, and often a driveshaft. These components influence the shape of the passenger compartment and create strict packaging constraints.

An EV can be much flatter.

The battery can sit beneath the cabin. Motors can be mounted near the front or rear axle. Electronic control increasingly replaces large mechanical linkages.

The result is the familiar skateboard platform: a relatively flat structural base containing the battery, running gear, electric motors, and major control components.

That can free designers to change what sits above it.

Hyundai Motor Group says its E-GMP architecture uses modularization and standardization to reduce complexity and support multiple vehicle categories. The standardized battery system can also be configured according to the performance and range requirements of different models.

Electrification does not automatically make a vehicle modular, but it removes many of the packaging obstacles that previously made extreme modularity difficult.

The Modular Platform Is Already Mainstream

The least visible version of the modular EV revolution is also the most commercially successful.

A customer may see several completely different cars in a showroom without realizing they share substantial engineering underneath.

Volkswagen’s MEB illustrates the economic logic. A single electric architecture can be used across multiple models, allowing batteries, motors, electronics, software, production processes, and development work to be shared. Volkswagen transferred this philosophy from its earlier modular combustion platforms into its dedicated EV architecture.

Hyundai Motor Group followed a similar strategy with E-GMP. Vehicles built on the architecture can use rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, different battery configurations, and very different body shapes while retaining common engineering.

This type of modularity matters because automobile development is extraordinarily expensive.

If a manufacturer can use the same fundamental architecture for five, ten, or more vehicles, it can spread engineering and tooling costs across much greater production volume.

That can also accelerate development.

A sedan no longer requires an entirely new electrical system, battery architecture, motor family, or software foundation simply because the body is different.

Kia PV5 Shows What the Next Step Looks Like

The Kia PV5 offers one of the clearest modern examples of modularity moving from the hidden platform into the visible vehicle itself.

It uses Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated E-GMP.S architecture, developed for purpose-built electric vehicles. The platform follows the skateboard principle and supports multiple upper-body configurations on a common base.

Kia has gone further with what it calls a Flexible Body System.

Major structures including sections of the body, doors, tailgates, exterior panels, and interior components are modularized. The front cabin and first-row structure remain common, while different rear structures, roof heights, and other elements can be combined for different applications. Kia says the approach can support up to 16 PV5 variants through a relatively small number of modular assemblies.

That makes it possible to build passenger, cargo, chassis-cab, refrigerated, camper, and other specialized versions from the same underlying concept.

This is much closer to the “constructor set” idea.

However, there is an important distinction.

The modular pieces are primarily designed to make manufacturing and professional conversion easier. They are not necessarily intended for an owner to remove the rear half of a vehicle on Saturday morning and install a camper body by Sunday.

Why Commercial Vehicles May Benefit First

Extreme modularity arguably makes more sense for vans, delivery vehicles, service fleets, and specialized commercial vehicles than for ordinary private cars.

A private owner generally buys a car for a relatively stable purpose.

A business fleet may need:

Parcel-delivery vans

Refrigerated vehicles

Passenger shuttles

Mobile workshops

Wheelchair-accessible vehicles

Utility bodies

Open cargo beds

Service vehicles

If many of those variants share the same chassis, battery, drivetrain, electronics, and front cabin, manufacturing becomes considerably easier.

Maintenance can also become more standardized.

Technicians can train on common systems. Spare parts inventories may shrink. Fleet software can work across multiple body types. Common motors and batteries may reduce lifecycle complexity.

Kia says the PV5 platform was designed with serviceability in mind, including modular brackets intended to simplify maintenance and reduce total cost of ownership for fleet operators.

For commercial users, that may be more valuable than visual novelty.

REE Automotive Pushes Modularity Toward the Wheels

REE Automotive demonstrates an even more radical approach.

Its electric platforms use compact assemblies positioned at the corners of the chassis. These modules integrate key systems including steering, braking, suspension, powertrain, and electronic control.

Because those functions are concentrated near the wheels, the central platform can remain very flat. REE also uses electronic steering, braking, and drive controls rather than conventional mechanical connections.

The idea offers substantial packaging freedom.

Different bodies can potentially be fitted to the same fundamental platform, while the flat floor maximizes cargo or passenger volume.

REE describes its architecture as capable of supporting different sizes and shapes of commercial electric vehicles, and its P7 platform has been designed around four modular corner units.

This architecture also illustrates where software and modularity begin to merge.

When steering, braking, and propulsion are electronically controlled, vehicle functions can increasingly be defined by software rather than fixed mechanical geometry.

The modular EV of the future may therefore be not only a collection of interchangeable hardware modules, but also a software-defined machine whose behavior can change without replacing major physical components.

Could Owners Eventually Swap the Battery?

Battery swapping is a different but highly relevant form of modularity.

Instead of treating the battery pack as a permanent part of the vehicle, it becomes a replaceable energy module.

NIO has demonstrated that the concept can work at substantial scale. The company reported completing its 100 millionth battery swap in February 2026 and said it had deployed 3,790 battery-swap stations worldwide at that point. It says a typical swap takes around three minutes.

That changes the ownership model.

A driver does not necessarily need to wait for the installed battery to charge. A depleted pack can be removed automatically and replaced with a charged one.

Potentially, standardized swappable packs could also allow vehicles to use batteries of different capacities depending on the journey.

But battery swapping introduces major infrastructure and standardization challenges. Automakers must agree on dimensions, mounting systems, cooling interfaces, communication protocols, electrical connections, and safety requirements.

A proprietary swapping ecosystem can work. An industry-wide universal battery is much harder.

Could You Turn a Sedan into a Pickup?

This is the version of modularity that captures the imagination.

Imagine buying one electric platform and keeping it for fifteen years.

During the week it carries a compact commuter body.

For a vacation, a larger cabin is installed.

For work, it becomes a pickup.

Later, the owner replaces the battery and upgrades the motors instead of buying an entirely new car.

Technically, certain parts of this vision are possible.

Economically and legally, it becomes much more complicated.

The body of a modern car is not merely decorative. It is an essential part of crash protection, stiffness, aerodynamics, weather sealing, noise control, occupant restraint performance, and structural durability.

Changing it affects:

Crash behavior

Center of gravity

Weight distribution

Aerodynamic stability

Braking

Suspension calibration

Sensor placement

Airbag operation

Driver-assistance systems

Every configuration may require validation.

That means the seemingly simple idea of “clicking on another body” quickly becomes an engineering certification problem.

Safety Is the Biggest Constraint

Modern vehicles are engineered as complete safety systems.

The passenger cell, battery enclosure, doors, pillars, bumpers, seats, airbags, cameras, radar sensors, and structural deformation zones are designed to interact during a crash.

A module cannot simply be mechanically compatible. It must also behave predictably under severe loads.

Battery protection is particularly important because a high-voltage pack often forms a major structural element of an EV.

Hyundai describes its E-GMP architecture as using high-strength structures around the battery and carefully designed load paths to manage collision energy.

Volkswagen similarly integrates the battery into a protected underbody structure with crash protection around the pack.

As modularity increases, engineers must preserve that protection across every permitted configuration.

The limiting factor is not whether engineers can make parts detachable. It is whether every resulting vehicle can remain safe, durable, legal, and predictable.

Modularity Can Reduce Development Cost — but It Can Also Create Compromise

Shared architecture sounds universally beneficial, but modularity has trade-offs.

A platform designed for many vehicles must accommodate conflicting requirements.

A sports car wants low weight and maximum stiffness.

A delivery van wants cargo volume and durability.

A family SUV wants comfort and ground clearance.

A city car wants compact dimensions and low cost.

The more roles one architecture must support, the harder it becomes to optimize perfectly for any single one.

That is why successful modular platforms do not make every component identical.

Instead, engineers standardize the systems that benefit from commonality while preserving flexibility where different vehicles genuinely need different solutions.

Academic research into modular EV platforms has similarly noted that manufacturers use compatible structural modules, electric-drive architectures, and adaptable battery designs to achieve mass-production efficiency while still supporting different vehicle requirements.

An Expert View: Standardization Is About Flexibility, Not Sameness

When Hyundai Motor Group introduced E-GMP, Fayez Abdul Rahman, then Senior Vice President of its Vehicle Architecture Development Center, described the platform as the result of years of research and development combining the group’s advanced EV technologies. The company emphasized that modularization and standardization were intended to support faster development across multiple vehicle segments rather than make every model identical.

That distinction explains why automotive modularity works.

A good modular platform does not force every vehicle to become the same car. It creates standardized interfaces that allow different cars to share expensive technology without sharing the same purpose.

This is similar to the logic behind modern computing: common standards can support radically different machines.

Repairability Could Be a Major Benefit

There is another potential advantage that receives less attention: modular vehicles could become easier to repair.

Today’s cars increasingly contain integrated assemblies that can be expensive to replace after relatively minor damage.

A properly designed modular architecture could allow damaged components to be removed as defined units.

For fleets, this could reduce downtime significantly.

REE, for example, promotes the possibility of servicing or replacing its compact corner assemblies as part of its total-cost-of-ownership strategy.

Modular batteries may also improve repairability if packs are designed around replaceable sections rather than requiring complete pack replacement.

However, modular does not automatically mean repairable.

Manufacturers can build standardized assemblies that are still sealed, proprietary, or economically impractical to repair. The outcome depends on engineering choices, spare-parts availability, software access, and regulation.

Software May Become the Most Important Module

The next generation of modular electric vehicles will likely combine standardized physical architecture with software-defined functions.

A common platform could leave the factory with similar hardware but behave differently depending on software configuration.

Power output, thermal management, fleet-management functions, driver assistance, charging behavior, diagnostics, and other systems can increasingly be updated digitally.

REE’s current architecture, for example, combines by-wire controls with zonal electronics and over-the-air update capability.

This creates a vehicle that can evolve without physically replacing everything.

It also creates new risks.

Software compatibility becomes as important as mechanical compatibility. Cybersecurity becomes a safety issue. An unsupported electronic module could potentially make an otherwise functional vehicle obsolete.

The modular car therefore requires long-term software support as much as standardized bolts and connectors.

Modularity Does Not Guarantee Commercial Success

Engineering elegance is not enough to build a successful car company.

Canoo became one of the most prominent advocates of a highly flexible electric skateboard architecture and developed distinctive commercial vehicles around it. Yet the company struggled to scale production and filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in January 2025.

Its failure does not prove that modular EV platforms are flawed.

It demonstrates that the automotive industry remains brutally capital-intensive.

A company still needs factories, suppliers, quality control, certification, sales, service, financing, and enough production volume to spread costs.

A brilliant modular platform cannot compensate for an unsustainable business model.

Will Consumers Really Want a Car That Changes Shape?

For private buyers, full physical reconfiguration may remain niche.

Most owners probably do not need one vehicle to become three different vehicles.

What consumers are more likely to benefit from is subtler modularity:

More easily replaceable batteries

Standardized electronics

Upgradeable computing hardware

Flexible seating

Accessory mounting systems

Replaceable interior modules

Easier repairs

Longer software support

Greater parts compatibility

Commercial operators may adopt far more aggressive modularity because utilization and operating cost matter more than emotional attachment to a particular body style.

This suggests two different futures.

The private car may become modular underneath.

The commercial vehicle may become modular both underneath and above.

Could Modular EVs Last Longer?

One of the most promising possibilities is extending useful vehicle life.

Cars are often replaced even though many expensive components remain functional. A modular architecture could theoretically allow worn or outdated sections to be replaced while retaining the rest of the vehicle.

A battery might be renewed.

A computing module could be upgraded.

A commercial body could be replaced after years of hard use while the underlying drive platform continues operating.

This could reduce material consumption, but only if manufacturers design vehicles around long-term compatibility.

If interfaces change every few years, modularity could instead create another layer of technological obsolescence.

The environmental value of modularity depends less on how many pieces a car contains than on whether those pieces can genuinely extend its useful life.

Conclusion

So, is a modular electric vehicle a car or a constructor set?

Increasingly, it is both — but not in the simplistic sense of owners casually rearranging an automobile in their garage.

Today’s most successful modular EVs use standardized platforms, battery architectures, motors, electronics, and manufacturing systems to create many different vehicles from common engineering. Volkswagen MEB and Hyundai E-GMP demonstrate this approach at large scale. Kia’s PV5 pushes the idea further by combining a dedicated electric skateboard with modular body structures capable of supporting numerous specialized variants. REE explores an even more radical architecture in which major steering, braking, suspension, and propulsion components are concentrated into modular corners.

Battery swapping shows that even one of the most expensive components in an EV can become a serviceable module when the vehicle and infrastructure are designed around that principle.

But safety, crash certification, structural integrity, software compatibility, cost, and regulation prevent the automobile from becoming an unrestricted collection of interchangeable parts.

The future modular electric vehicle is unlikely to resemble a toy that can become anything overnight. It is more likely to be a carefully standardized technical ecosystem: one platform, many bodies, replaceable systems, configurable software, and a much longer list of possible roles than a conventional car could ever support.

Electric vehicles are already changing the automobile at a mechanical level.
