A modern electric car may carry a high-voltage battery containing tens or even more than 100 kilowatt-hours of stored energy. The battery sits beneath the passenger compartment in many designs, while orange high-voltage cables, electric motors, inverters, cooling systems, and sophisticated electronics are distributed around the vehicle.

That sounds very different from a conventional gasoline car, but different does not automatically mean more dangerous.

Modern electric vehicles are engineered around strict crash-safety standards. Their batteries are enclosed in reinforced structures, high-voltage circuits are designed to isolate themselves after severe impacts, and the absence of a large combustion engine can give engineers additional freedom when designing frontal crumple zones.

At the same time, EVs introduce hazards that gasoline cars do not have, particularly damaged lithium-ion batteries, thermal runaway, residual electrical energy, and the possibility of delayed battery fires.

The most accurate conclusion is that electric vehicles can provide excellent crash protection, but their post-crash risks require different procedures from those used with conventional cars.

Are Electric Vehicles Safer in a Crash?

There is no simple rule saying that every electric vehicle is safer than every gasoline vehicle.

Crash safety depends primarily on the design of the individual vehicle.

Important factors include:

Passenger-compartment strength

Crumple-zone design

Side-impact protection

Airbag performance

Seat-belt systems

Vehicle size and mass

Battery protection

Automatic emergency braking

Structural compatibility with other vehicles

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has tested electric vehicles for many years and has found that they can perform extremely well in conventional crashworthiness evaluations.

IIHS Vice President Raul Arbelaez wrote that electric vehicles are “just as safe as other vehicles for their occupants”, while noting that increasing EV weight creates a separate concern for people traveling in lighter vehicles. By 2023, IIHS had conducted 55 EV crash tests without experiencing a battery fire during those tests.

Earlier research involving IIHS and the Australasian New Car Assessment Program also concluded that the variation in crashworthiness among electric and hybrid vehicles was broadly comparable to that seen among conventionally powered vehicles.

In other words, an EV powertrain does not inherently make a car unsafe.

The Battery Pack Can Strengthen the Vehicle Structure

Most modern electric vehicles use a large battery pack mounted low in the floor.

That architecture has several advantages.

The battery enclosure is usually a rigid structural component protected by strong side rails, crossmembers, shields, and crash structures. Because manufacturers must protect the cells from deformation and penetration, the lower portion of the vehicle can become exceptionally rigid.

This can help preserve the passenger compartment during some collisions.

The low battery position also lowers the vehicle’s center of gravity, which can reduce the tendency to roll over compared with a similarly shaped vehicle carrying more weight higher in the body.

However, the battery is not designed to absorb unlimited impact energy.

A severe side impact, high-speed collision with a rigid object, extreme underbody strike, or major deformation can damage the pack.

That is why modern EV design tries to direct crash forces around rather than through the battery.

The battery pack is both a protected energy source and an important structural element, but it must remain isolated from severe deformation whenever possible.

Why the Front of an EV Can Be Safer Than It Looks

Traditional cars must package a large engine, transmission, exhaust components, cooling hardware, and associated mechanical systems in the front.

Electric cars often require much less mechanical space there.

This provides engineers with additional freedom to design energy-absorbing structures.

In a frontal collision, the front of the vehicle is supposed to deform progressively. That controlled deformation absorbs kinetic energy before it reaches the occupant compartment.

The goal is not to build a front end that never bends.

A vehicle that remained completely rigid could transmit enormous deceleration forces directly to passengers.

Instead, engineers attempt to create predictable crush zones while keeping the cabin structurally intact.

A 2024 IIHS study comparing battery-electric and internal-combustion vehicles found that current EVs were not excessively aggressive in terms of several frontal-crash stiffness measures. Researchers also noted that EV architecture can offer more design flexibility between the frame rails because there is no conventional engine occupying that space.

What Happens to the High-Voltage System During an Accident?

A passenger EV can operate at hundreds of volts.

Some modern architectures approach 800 volts or more.

Manufacturers therefore design vehicles so that high-voltage energy is isolated after a significant crash.

Depending on the model, crash sensors may trigger contactors or other electrical isolation devices that disconnect the traction battery from parts of the drivetrain.

High-voltage cables are normally clearly identified, often in orange, so trained emergency responders know which components must not be cut or disturbed.

U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 305 includes requirements intended to reduce electrical shock and battery-related hazards after crashes. NHTSA has specifically addressed electrical isolation following crash tests as part of this standard.

However, disconnecting the vehicle does not mean the battery itself contains no energy.

A damaged EV battery must always be treated as energized.

NHTSA advises emergency responders and the public to assume that high-voltage batteries and associated components remain energized after a collision.

Can You Be Electrocuted Inside a Crashed EV?

Under normal crash conditions, the high-voltage system is designed to remain electrically isolated from the passenger compartment and conductive body structure.

That means occupants should not suddenly receive an electric shock simply because the car has crashed.

Manufacturers use insulation monitoring, protected wiring routes, reinforced connectors, automatic disconnect systems, and electrical isolation between the battery and vehicle chassis.

The greater risk occurs if the vehicle has suffered severe damage and someone touches exposed high-voltage components.

This is especially relevant for:

Emergency responders

Tow operators

Repair technicians

Owners approaching a badly damaged vehicle

People attempting unauthorized repairs

NHTSA specifically warns against touching exposed electrical components or high-voltage wiring after an accident.

For the driver, the correct response after a serious collision is not to inspect the battery personally.

Leave that to trained professionals.

EV Battery Fires: The Risk Everyone Talks About

Battery fires receive disproportionate attention because they can look dramatic and can be difficult to extinguish.

The most important mechanism is called thermal runaway.

A lithium-ion cell can become unstable if it is severely damaged, overheated, internally short-circuited, or affected by another failure.

The cell temperature rises, chemical reactions accelerate, and additional heat is released.

If this heat spreads to neighboring cells, the reaction can propagate through part of the battery pack.

Possible warning signs include:

Smoke

Sparks

Unusual odors

Hissing sounds

Popping noises

Rapid heating

Flames

Gas venting

Battery fires can be particularly challenging because the pack contains many individual cells and significant stored energy.

The National Transportation Safety Board investigated several EV fires and warned that damaged lithium-ion batteries can enter thermal runaway and can reignite because energy remains trapped inside the damaged battery.

The unusual characteristic of an EV fire is not simply that the battery can burn, but that internal reactions can continue after visible flames appear to have been extinguished.

Are EVs More Likely to Catch Fire Than Gasoline Cars?

This question is frequently answered with overly simplistic statistics.

Reliable comparisons are difficult because fleets differ significantly in age, vehicle type, mileage, accident exposure, reporting methods, and battery technology.

Gasoline vehicles contain flammable liquid fuel and numerous ignition sources. They can also burn after collisions.

EVs replace that fuel system with a high-energy battery that has different failure characteristics.

Crash-testing experience provides useful context. IIHS reported no fires in its first 55 electric-vehicle crash tests, although the organization still treats battery condition seriously and monitors voltage and temperature after tests.

That does not prove EV battery fires are impossible.

It shows that properly designed battery packs can survive severe standardized impacts without automatically catching fire.

The appropriate comparison is therefore not “EVs never burn” versus “gasoline cars burn.”

Both vehicle types can catch fire after severe damage, but the mechanisms and emergency-response procedures differ.

Why Delayed Fires Matter

One of the most important differences appears after the crash scene seems calm.

A damaged battery may initially show no obvious signs of fire.

Internal cell damage can nevertheless create a short circuit later.

That means thermal runaway can develop minutes or even hours after the collision.

NHTSA warns that physical battery damage can lead to an immediate or delayed release of flammable gases and fire.

The NTSB has similarly emphasized the possibility of battery reignition.

This is why severely damaged EVs may need special storage procedures after recovery.

A tow operator cannot simply treat the car exactly like an ordinary damaged vehicle and leave it beside other vehicles without considering battery condition.

What Emergency Responders Do Differently with an EV

Firefighters and rescue teams need to identify the vehicle and its high-voltage components quickly.

Emergency procedures can include:

Stabilizing the vehicle.

Switching it off where possible.

Keeping electronic keys away from the vehicle.

Identifying high-voltage cables and battery locations.

Avoiding cutting through dangerous electrical components.

Monitoring the battery for smoke, heat, sounds, or gas release.

Using appropriate firefighting procedures if thermal runaway occurs.

Considering the possibility of delayed reignition.

NHTSA now maintains manufacturer-supplied emergency response guides and rescue sheets for electric-powered vehicles. These documents provide model-specific information on battery location, high-voltage components, fire, submersion, towing, and storage.

This is an important development because EV architecture varies substantially from one model to another.

What Happens If an EV Is Crushed from the Side?

Side impacts are especially challenging because there is relatively little distance between the vehicle exterior and the occupants.

In an EV, engineers must also protect the battery edges, which may extend beneath most of the cabin floor.

Manufacturers typically use reinforced rocker panels, crossmembers, battery-case structures, and side-impact beams.

Modern side crash tests are therefore particularly relevant when evaluating electric-car safety.

Consumers should avoid assuming that the battery itself guarantees good protection.

The better approach is to examine independent crash-test results for the exact model.

IIHS recommends looking for a strong occupant compartment, effective crumple zones, good side structures, strong roof performance, properly integrated airbags and seat belts, and effective crash-avoidance technology.

EV Weight Helps Occupants but Creates Another Safety Problem

Electric vehicles are often heavier than equivalent gasoline vehicles because battery packs can weigh several hundred kilograms.

Physics gives heavier vehicles an advantage when they collide with lighter ones.

IIHS explains that in a two-vehicle collision, the heavier vehicle tends to push the lighter vehicle backward. Occupants of the heavier vehicle therefore experience lower forces, while those inside the lighter vehicle experience greater forces.

For the occupants of a heavy electric SUV or pickup, that additional mass can provide a crash-protection advantage.

For everyone else, it creates concern.

A very heavy EV striking a small conventional car can transfer enormous energy.

Pedestrians and cyclists also face risks from increasingly large and heavy vehicles, although shape, speed, front-end design, and visibility are important factors as well.

An electric vehicle can be highly protective for the people inside it while simultaneously presenting a greater physical threat to occupants of much lighter vehicles.

That is one of the major crash-safety questions facing the next generation of EV design.

What Should the Driver Do Immediately After an EV Crash?

If the collision is minor and there is no sign of battery damage, normal accident procedures generally apply.

After a serious crash, however, several EV-specific precautions are sensible.

If it is safe to do so:

Place the vehicle in Park.

Turn the vehicle off.

Activate the hazard lights.

Exit if conditions require it.

Keep away from exposed high-voltage wiring.

Do not touch leaking fluids.

Call emergency services if the crash is serious.

Tell responders that the vehicle is electric.

Stay away if there is smoke, unusual heat, sparks, or strange noises.

NHTSA advises people to leave the vehicle immediately if a fire occurs and to remain at a safe distance from smoke, vapors, and gases.

Never attempt to open, disconnect, puncture, or repair a damaged traction battery yourself.

What About an EV That Has Been Flooded or Submerged?

Crash damage and flood damage can interact dangerously.

Water intrusion, corrosion, damaged connectors, and compromised battery structures can create electrical or fire hazards.

NHTSA warns that flooded hybrid and electric vehicles can present high-voltage shock and fire hazards. It recommends contacting the manufacturer, dealer, or emergency services if battery damage is suspected.

A flooded EV that appears normal should not automatically be considered safe to drive or charge.

Saltwater exposure is particularly problematic because corrosion may continue after the vehicle has been removed from the water.

Professional inspection is essential.

Towing a Crashed Electric Vehicle

A severely damaged EV should be recovered according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Some electric vehicles must be transported on a flatbed because uncontrolled wheel rotation can damage components or generate electrical energy through the motors.

The battery’s condition must also be considered.

NHTSA guidance advises against storing a severely damaged lithium-ion vehicle inside a structure or close to other vehicles or buildings when battery damage is suspected.

That recommendation reflects the possibility of delayed thermal events.

Tow operators increasingly receive specialized training for this reason.

How to Choose a Safe Electric Vehicle

Consumers should evaluate EV safety the same way they would evaluate any modern car, while adding several battery-specific considerations.

Look for:

Strong independent crash-test results

Modern side-impact performance

Automatic emergency braking

Pedestrian and cyclist detection

Effective airbag systems

Strong roof and passenger-cell structure

Well-protected battery placement

Manufacturer emergency-response documentation

Proven battery recalls and safety history

Reliable driver-assistance systems

Do not judge safety primarily by battery chemistry, horsepower, acceleration, or vehicle price.

A very expensive EV can still perform differently from another model in a specific crash.

Independent testing remains one of the most useful sources of information.

Conclusion

Electric vehicles introduce new crash-safety questions, but they are not inherently dangerous vehicles.

Modern EVs can offer excellent occupant protection because of strong battery structures, low centers of gravity, sophisticated restraint systems, electronically controlled high-voltage isolation, and carefully engineered crumple zones.

Independent testing by organizations such as IIHS has demonstrated that electric vehicles can match or exceed the crashworthiness expected from modern gasoline vehicles. At the same time, experts emphasize that heavy battery packs create compatibility concerns for lighter vehicles and other road users.

The major difference appears after severe battery damage.

Lithium-ion packs can retain substantial electrical energy, damaged cells may enter thermal runaway, and battery fires can reignite after the initial incident. Emergency responders therefore use EV-specific procedures, and severely damaged vehicles may require special towing, monitoring, and storage.

For the occupants, a well-designed modern electric vehicle can be extremely safe in a collision. The technology does not eliminate crash risk; it changes where that risk exists and how professionals must manage it after the impact.

Electric vehicles are increasingly common on roads around the world, yet one question continues to worry many buyers: what happens to an EV in a serious crash?
